THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC - LONG LIVE THE ROARING SPORTS CAR!
As the world accelerates toward an electric future, a question arises in the middle of an EV hiccup in Europe: Can the electric revolution and the love for roaring sports cars coexist? To answer this, we need to divide cars into two categories: vehicles as primarily transportation and cars as sources of passion and joy.

"The car is part of one's personality. It conveys an image and is simultaneously a statement. Additionally, the close relationship between a person and a vehicle is a complex subject."

Divide to Unite: Avoiding One-Size-Fits-All

Attempts to mandate a 100% electric future without exceptions may backfire. Bans based on ideology for all combustion engines can lead to resistance, slowing down the overall transition to sustainable transportation - a phenomenon known as the Streisand Effect.

Instead, focusing on the large majority of the vehicles that are used for daily transportation while allowing room for the 5% or less enthusiast cars to keep their combustion engines could lead to broader acceptance and faster progress.

Let me explain:

Electric Vehicles: The Perfect Commodity

For most, cars are tools to get from point A to point B in the first place. Electric vehicles (EVs) excel in this role. They are efficient, increasingly cost-effective, and a smoother driving experience. EVs are the ideal solution for daily commuting and general transportation needs.

Luxury Meets Electric: A New Kind of Experience Called Silence

It's not all or nothing, just different. Luxury brands like Rolls-Royce have demonstrated that electric drivetrains can enhance certain automotive experiences. The Spectre, for example, uses its electric motor to achieve a level of silence and smoothness unattainable with combustion engines, achieving its own kind of luxury experience in silence.

The Enthusiast's Car: A Niche Worth Preserving

On the other end of the spectrum are enthusiast cars - machines that are more than just transportation. These are the timeless, mechanical, combustion-engine vehicles that deliver a sensory driving experience unmatched by current electric technology.

Remember the kid who hears the distinctive roar of a mid-engined V8 Ferrari F355 or F360 echoing through a tunnel, eyes lighting up in excitement and searching for that iconic car. For enthusiasts, cars are more than transportation; they're an extension of personality, the connection between driver and machine, the sound of the engine, and the timeless design are a source of inspiration.

Learning from History: Horses and Cars

The evolution of horses in society offers a valuable parallel. Once essential for transportation and work, horses became less common with the advent of the automobile. Today, they are mainly used for recreation and sport - a niche but enduring role. Similarly, combustion-engine cars could transition from everyday necessity to cherished hobby without hindering the adoption of electric vehicles for the masses.

Electric Hypercars: Impressive but Missing Something?

Electric sports cars like the Rimac Nevera have incredible performance stats on paper. Yet, they don't capture the hearts of enthusiasts, there's something about the feel and sound of a combustion engine that electric motors haven't matched. Brands like Koenigsegg and Pagani continue to see high demand and appreciating values for their combustion-engine hypercars, suggesting that raw performance isn't the only factor enthusiasts care about. Cars, like watches, tell a story.

The Rise of the Restomod

Events like the Monterey Car Week and the Goodwood Festival of Speed show a growing trend: Restomods. These upcycled sports cars blend vintage aesthetics with modern analog performance and reliability, catering to a niche market willing to invest in uniqueness and driving pleasure.

Meanwhile, traditional auto shows struggle because they often feature commodity cars and mobility concepts that lack the excitement enthusiasts seek. The market is signaling a clear divide between utility vehicles and those that offer a passionate driving experience beyond transportation.

A Balanced Path Forward

Electric vehicles are not a panacea for sustainability challenges, but they hold great potential for reducing emissions and improving daily transportation. By distinguishing between utility vehicles and enthusiast cars, we can accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future without losing the aspects of car culture that many people love.

Ideological rigidity overlooks the human element and the diverse reasons people love cars. Embracing a balanced approach that allows for both electric innovation and the preservation of mechanical artistry can lead to faster and more accepted progress than blanket bans and mandates.

The future is electric, but there's still a place for the roar of a sports car. By embracing both practicality and passion, we can build a sustainable future that honors both innovation and human emotion.
